“El Barrio Workshop – Excellent workshop! Leanne escorted us around El Barrio, taking us to areas I would never have found on my own. She also gave me lighting tips to help me get the type of shot I was seeking. I’m planning on taking another workshop with her this summer.” – Mary Beth, New York City. https://www.shootnewyorkcity.com/reviews/2017/5/23/review-by-mary-beth-new-york-city
Here’s a photos from the El Barrio Street Photography Workshop! There are many barber shops in East Harlem and we photographed many of them. We had a great time shooting street photography at the workshop in El Barrio today! It couldn’t have been better! Next workshop is in Harlem on Sunday 9 June. – Big Cans in El Barrio, 21 May 2017. https://www.shootnewyorkcity.com/blog/2017/5/21/a-sunday-in-el-barrio
I have upcoming Street Photography Workshops in East Harlem on 21 May and Harlem on 4 June both fabulous neighborhoods for street photography. This photo was taken during a photo tour in Harlem on 6 May 2017 – Harlem hustle.
Street photography is both a physical and a mental workout. It demands that you keep your eyes open and you’re constantly moving. Even when you’re moving in place. Turning for a different perspective. It is for me the perfect form of exercise. All while discovering and rediscovering neighborhoods and being awed by humanity in all it’s various forms and expressions. Photo taken during a workshop on 16 April 2017.
The next Street Photography Workshop is all new and takes place in El Barrio/East Harlem on Sunday 21 May. I do love this neighborhood and the street photography is fabulous. If you’ve taken my Harlem Street Photography Workshop in the past when it included some of El Barrio, not to worry. The majority of this workshop is in a different area. Either way, this workshop has something for everyone no matter your level as I work with each person on an individual basis as well as working with the group. There are only a few spaces still available. This photo was taken 16 April 2017 during a workshop in El Barrio.
I have a number of favorite places that I like to shoot. One of them is this red wall in East Harlem. So every time I do a photo tour or workshop in El Barrio, we always stop here and take a few photos. I do have a Street Photography Workshop in East Harlem/El Barrio on Sunday 21 May. So many things to photograph in New York City! – Red Wall in East Harlem, 6 May 2017.
One of the coolest neighborhoods in New York City is East Harlem also called El Barrio or Spanish Harlem. It was once a predominantly Italian neighborhood and many of the American-Italian crime families were located there including the Genovese family. Al Pacino was born in East Harlem and Celia Cruz and Tito Puente lived there and it’s home to Tupac Shakur. Now it is mostly Puerto Rican and Mexican. It is a very friendly and lively neighborhood which has resisted gentrification. Oh, and it’s fabulous for street photography! Whether you live in New York City or you are visiting the city, I highly recommend seeing it. I do photo tours and street photography workshops there on a very regular basis. This photo taken 6 May 2017 during a photo tour.
I quite like when street photography illustrates a sense of place. When it is as much about the human element as the actual setting that the photograph was taken. And for me that is a particularly urban element! That’s just my style. Street photography comes in all kinds of styles and flavors! If you are interested in doing street photography as a beginner or looking to advance your street photography, I have a Street Photography Workshop in El Barrio aka East Harlem on 21 May. It’s a fabulous neighborhood and in many ways it’s a real throwback to a different time. There are a few spaces still available for this workshop and you can register on my site and see reviews from people who attended previous workshops.
